Wood Stove Safety

• Install only UL approved stoves or fireplaces with clearances and floor protection recommended by the magnufacturer
• Woodstoves need to be on their own separate flue
• Clean and inspect all flues and stove pipes before heating season
• Burn only seasoned wood (at least 8 months split air dried) to reduce creosote buildup
• Dispose of ashes in a non-combustable, metal container with a lid. Place container outside. Embers generate carbon monoxide for hours or days after removal
• Properly install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of your home
